Purpose of the role

The purpose of this role is to analyze, recommend improvements, efficiently organize, and manage the direction of the Maintenance and Engineering teams, and to optimize area processes for the achievement of both short-term and long-term objectives in safety and compliance, equipment reliability, product quality and cost reduction. This role is responsible to develop the technical expertise and practice rigor required for our company to become a “world class” reliable supplier to our customers.

Core accountabilities
Ensure all safety practices are followed and develop a safety process within the areas of your accountability. Identify areas for opportunities to improve the safety aspects of processes and equipment.
Provide expert engineering advice and collaboration to all levels of the organization. Provide advice and assistance in developing changes aimed at improving Operations and Technical understanding and knowledge base.
Responsible for planning, scheduling, and executing capital projects according to strict deadlines and within budget. This includes accruing resources and coordinating the efforts of team members and third party contractors or consultants in order to deliver projects according to plan.
Develop and initiate yearly department operations plan. Draft and submit budget proposals and recommend subsequent budget changes when necessary.
Ensure that all plant, equipment, and facilities are utilized, operated and maintained efficiently and in a way that ensures effective reliability. Identify and implement Preventive Maintenance schedules and identification of planned outage work.
Develop and maintain relationships with outside technical sources, peers in other companies in the aluminum industry and equipment suppliers to enable appropriate information interchange. Stay abreast of new and developing technologies by attending seminars and talking to vendors.
Continually monitor and analyze the work of the Maintenance and Engineering department and identify, evaluate and implement improved methods, systems and equipment to increase its effectiveness.
Continually seek and develop production advances and foster collaboration. Review and implement designs that could increase throughput, quality, efficiency, and will help eliminate waste and cost.
Develop the capabilities of the Maintenance and Engineering department through effective training, proper role descriptions, performance reviews, and providing opportunities to maximize potential.
Manage routine labor relation activities such as handling grievances, implementing policy decisions and communications to employees.

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent is required.
5 years minimum heavy manufacturing experience.
Excellent interpersonal, planning and organizing, time management, and effective oral and written communication skills.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
Knowledge of continuous improvement techniques essential.
Ability to set a long term strategy along with managing short term objectives.
Ability to instill a sense of purpose and inspire actions in others.
Ability to assist team members through clear task assignment, feedback, and development planning.
Ability to bring together the appropriate people and information to make timely, effective decisions.
Ability to solve problems while exhibiting judgment and a realistic understanding of the issues involved.
Ability to achieve results, manage multiple tasks and objectives in parallel and manage the technical and social issues associated with change


Experience in the aluminum industry strongly preferred.
Working knowledge of the molten metal casting and rolling processes is strongly preferred.
Previous experience managing a department in a unionized environment is strongly preferred.
PLC, mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical experience strongly preferred.
