The Carman inspects, repairs and maintains railcars consistent with industry standards, Company requirements, Federal Railroad Association (FRA), and AAR (Association of American Railroads) requirements. Inspects and ensures freight car air brake operations and repair meet standards. Operates hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting equipment and measuring instruments, and safely operates forklifts, cranes, tractors, torches, and welders to complete work activities.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
OTHER DUTIES

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operation and the FRA
  • Weld repairs on railcars
  • Inspect car components for compliance with FRA, and AAR standards
  • Identify and/or analyze defective components: indicate necessary corrective action
  • Inspect the securement of lading in open top or flat cars for compliance with AAR rules
  • Inspect and salvage parts from dismantled and/or scrapped cars
  • Inspect and apply end-of–train device, and perform air brake tests, if applicable
  • Clean, lubricate and maintain tie-down devices, box car doors and other special equipment on railroad cars
  • Remove and replace wheels, couplers, draft gears and yokes
  • Inspect, replace and/or repair gaskets, air hoses, train lines, bulkheads and other interior load restraining equipment, steel sections such as: side sheets, cross bearers, crossties and under framing
  • Repair painting on cars and car components: stencil letters and numbers on cars
  • Build and/or repair components such as freight car doors, wooden floors or interior walls
  • Fabricate jigs and fixtures: use them to assemble parts on a car
  • Straighten or fabricate, then replace steel parts such as: grab irons, handholds, ladders, brackets, sill steps and patching components in accordance with both AAR and FRA guidelines
  • Operate light and heavy cranes, forklifts, and other car moving shop equipment
  • Re-rail cars and locomotives with re-railing equipment and perform other work associated with derailment service on the railroad
  • Obtain information from computer regarding car characteristics, destination, lading, and repair records and/or to file data such as: repair information, fad orders and car releases
  • Operate various vehicles both to and on the job site
  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
  • Wear required protective equipment such as: hard hats, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, safety glasses and fall protection
  • Maintain DOT qualifications
  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime and various shift work
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned

Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Aptitude in the Car repair field and demonstrate desire to learn
  • Read and interpret blueprints, AAR Rules, FRA Regulations
  • Attention to detail; multi-task to coordinate various activities simultaneously
  • Read, comprehend and comply published rules, procedure and manuals, inspection checklists, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memos and other work-related information
  • Working knowledge of FRA, AAR, OSHA, and EPA rules and regulations specific to Railcar
  • Effectively communicate with all level of employees and business associates in a clear, concise and professional manner
  • Write legibly to complete routine reports and other work documents
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrate problem solving and troubleshooting skills resulting in effective resolution
  • Professional integrity and accountability
  • Work in fast-paced, collaborative environment

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

  • Valid State Driver’s License - CDL (or attain one within 90 days); pass medical certification and Drivers Qualification File, pass DOT Drug & Alcohol testing
  • 1 welding qualification
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES WORK ENVIRONMENT TRAVEL
  • Previous experience in Rail Transportation, Supply Chain Logistics, Manufacturing and/or Oil & Gas industries
  • 1-3 years of welding or fabrication experience
  • General mechanical aptitude
  • Class A CDL
  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid or windy conditions caused by the weather including: snow, rain, heat and sub-freezing temps
  • Daily travel as business requires during scheduled work hours
